Carnival in Madrid: A Party Full of Tradition and Fun
Carnival in Madrid promises to be an unforgettable celebration, with an agenda packed with activities for all the family. Matadero Madrid, located in Plaza de Legazpi, becomes the epicentre of the festival, offering a varied programme that includes puppets, workshops, live music, parades and much more. In addition, traditions such as the Manteo del pelele and the Burial of the Sardine merge with modern and fun festivities, creating a unique and energetic atmosphere.
Deep-rooted traditions
Among the most deeply-rooted traditions of Carnival in Madrid are the Manteo del Pelele and the Burial of the Sardine. These rituals, of popular origin, have centuries of history and continue to be an integral part of the celebration. The Manteo del Pelele consists of hanging a rag doll in a public place and throwing it into the air while satirical verses are dedicated to it. On the other hand, the Burial of the Sardine marks the end of Carnival and symbolises the beginning of Lent. During this ceremony, a funeral parade takes place in which a papier-mâché sardine is "buried" as a symbol of the end of the festival.
