Discover Neomudejar
Neomudéjar is a must for all lovers of avant-garde art and a delight for those with a passion for secret places and industrial and urban environments.
It is a former railway warehouse that belonged to Atocha Station and has seen a new lease of life as an arts centre. Like other better known proposals in the capital such as La Tabacalera or La Casa Encendida, Neomudéjar seeks to offer a space for the arts that are far removed from the conventional art circuit, exhibiting works from disciplines such as street art, robotics, video art, performances and a long etcetera.
For lovers of avant-garde art, Kikekeller in Malasaña is also a must-see. It is an art gallery that hides a secret inside. At night, its back room becomes a very trendy speakeasy where you can enjoy some of the best gin and tonics in the capital.
San Miguel Market
Located just a few metres from Ópera, the Mercado de San Miguel is the only iron market that has survived to the present day. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the monument category, it is a visit worthwhile simply for the beauty of its structure.
It is also a delight for the taste buds, because in this historic building that has adapted so well to modern times, you can find a local and experimental gastronomic offer of luxury, which is one of the places included in our post Madrid in 2 days.
Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute
Located in Moncloa, this building is an architectural jewel that many are unaware of. The headquarters of Spain's Cultural Heritage is notable for its construction in the shape of a crown of thorns, commissioned to Fernando de Higueras and Antonio Miró in 1965.
This building was recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2001 and is dedicated to the restoration and conservation of pieces and cultural assets of Spanish heritage.
Desert City
Madrid has its own desert, not without glamour. Desert City has a state-of-the-art nursery that allows it to create a unique space with more than 5,000 square metres of experimental botanical garden.
This landscaped garden is dominated by cacti of all shapes and sizes. Specifically, Desert City has more than 400 xerophytic species accompanied by many other plants, including species native to the Community of Madrid.
Other options that will also appeal to nature lovers include the rose gardens which can be found next to the Basilica of San Fernando el Grande, in La Latina. It is a beautiful secret corner, very quiet, ideal for contemplating the Madrid sunset.
Nor can we fail to recommend the tea garden inside the Museum of Romanticism, where you can enjoy pastries and homemade cakes while you take a break from your tour of the museum, which houses more than 1,600 pieces dating from the Romantic period.
Barrio de las letras
