Sant Antoni in Mallorca: tradition, fire and celebration

Every January, Mallorca transforms to celebrate Sant Antoni, one of the island’s most emblematic and deeply rooted festivities. With strong agricultural origins, this celebration honours San Antonio Abad , the patron saint of animals and protector of the countryside, recalling a time when rural life depended heavily on livestock and farming. Today, the festivities combine religious rituals, folklore, gastronomy and unique spectacles that attract both locals and visitors eager to experience an authentic Mallorcan tradition.

Origins and Meaning of the Festival

The celebration of Sant Antoni in Mallorca traditionally takes place on 16th and 17th January, although in some towns events begin several days earlier and can extend into the third week of January. Its origins date back centuries, when rural communities sought the saint’s protection for their animals and crops. Over time, these beliefs evolved into rituals and customs that remain very much alive today, such as the Beneïdes (animal blessings), parades of dimonis and the lighting of large bonfires known as foguerons.

Among the many towns that celebrate Sant Antoni, Sa Pobla stands out as the epicentre of the festivities, alongside municipalities such as Manacor, Artà, Muro, Pollença, Sineu and Palma. While each place adds its own character, they all share the same core elements that preserve the essence of Mallorcan tradition.

The Dimonis and the Revetla de Sant Antoni

One of the most eagerly awaited moments is the appearance of the dimonis. Dressed in striking costumes and masks representing demons, they roam the streets to the beat of drums and traditional music, creating an atmosphere of mystery and excitement that signals the start of the Revetla de Sant Antoni. This lively street celebration, held on the afternoon and evening of 16th January, blends the theatrical presence of the dimonis with the warmth of the foguerons, bonfires lit in streets and squares where people gather to share food, drinks and music

During the Revetla, visitors can enjoy typical local products such as sobrasada, botifarrons, espinagades (a traditional pastry filled with cabbage, pork or eel) and coques amb pebres, all accompanied by the unmistakable sounds of ximbombes and improvised verses known as glosses. This fusion of flavours, sounds and fire turns the night into a truly multisensory experience.

The day of Sant Antoni and the Beneïdes

On 17 January, the focus shifts to the main celebration, the day of Sant Antoni. In many municipalities, including Palma and MuroThe following are carried out Beneïdeswhere domestic and farm animals receive the parish priest's blessing as they parade through the central square or in front of the church. This tradition, in addition to its spiritual value, reinforces the link between the community and its agricultural heritage.

At Pollença, young people participate in the curious tradition of the Pi de Sant Antoni, dragging a huge pine tree to the Plaça Vella, where it is soaped and decorated, symbolising the arrival of prosperity and the purification of the people. These customs, full of emotion and energy, show how Mallorcan folklore combines religion, nature and entertainment in the same event.
