Discover the Roman City of Pollentia: A Journey to the Past in Mallorca
Mallorca is not only known for its paradisiacal beaches and vibrant nightlife, but also for its rich history. In the north of the island, between the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia, lies an archaeological treasure trove that reveals the secrets of Roman life in Mallorca: the city of Pollentia. Founded in 123 BC by the consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus, Pollentia represents one of the earliest examples of urbanisation on the island and offers visitors a fascinating glimpse of life in ancient Rome.
A Journey through Time: History of Pollentia
Pollentia, the Roman city that marked the beginning of urban life in Mallorca, became the nerve centre of the island during the Roman period. Thanks to its strategic location, Pollentia prospered rapidly, extending over 15 to 20 hectares. This urban boom, which took place between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD, was reflected in its architecture and urban planning, which included an advanced water supply and sewage network.
The grid layout of the city, with streets following a north-south orientation, was typical of Roman cities and facilitated the organisation of urban space. Today, the ruins of Pollentia offer a clear view of its past grandeur, with key areas such as La Portella, the Forum y the Theatre that still retain their splendour.
La Portella: Ancient Residences
La Portellaone of the most outstanding residential areas of Pollentia, gives us an insight into the daily life of its ancient inhabitants. This sector reveals the layout of several domus, the Roman dwellings, and the layout of the streets that connected them. Among the houses excavated, the House of the Two TreasuresIt is remarkable for its well-preserved structure and its central atrium, around which the interior spaces were organised.
A few steps from this house is the Bronze Chief's Housefamous for the discovery of a bronze sculpture that is preserved in the Alcúdia Museum. Although the Northwest House is less well preserved, its foundations offer a glimpse of the Roman wall from the 3rd century AD, a testimony to the fortification of the city.
The Forum: Heart of Public Life
The Forum was the nerve centre of Pollentia, the place where political, commercial and social activities took place. Opened to the public in 2002, the Forum has revealed valuable information about the urban organisation of the city. At its core are the remains of the Capitoline Templetwo smaller temples and an extensive complex of Tabernaewhich were the commercial areas of the city.
The importance of the Forum in the daily life of Pollentia is evidenced by the numerous ornamental and architectural elements that can still be seen. The square, which has been the subject of extensive excavations, provides a unique insight into the character and structure of the Roman city.
The Theatre: A Stage for History
The theatre of Pollentialocated in the south of the city near the Roman port, is one of the most impressive monuments still standing. Excavated into the rock, the theatre takes advantage of the natural unevenness of the terrain for its construction. Dating from the 1st century AD, its structure includes key elements such as the cavea (the seats for the audience), the orchestra (the semi-circular area in front of the stage) and the stage (the space where the performances took place).
Despite erosion and the passage of time, the theatre retains much of its original structure. During the month of August, the theatre is brought back to its former glory with the "Agosto a la Fresca" programme, which presents cultural events and performances in a historic setting.
