The Jardines de Alfabia, located in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, in the municipality of Bunyola, are one of the most enchanting and representative spots in Mallorca. This historic complex, which combines Arab, Baroque and Renaissance elements, has been preserved over the centuries and remains a perfect place to stroll, relax and enjoy nature in all its splendor.

History and Arab origins

The Alfabia estate has roots dating back to the 13th century, during the period of Arab rule in Mallorca. Its name, Alfabia, means “jar” in Arabic, a reflection of the abundance of water that characterizes this enclave. The gardens, orchards and irrigation channels were designed to make the most of the natural resources of the land: fertile terraces, abundant sunshine, and a layout following the traditional patterns of Islamic gardening.

In later centuries, the property was remodeled in different styles, from Gothic to Baroque, passing through Renaissance, while always preserving elements of its Arab origins, especially in the irrigation system and water features that still amaze visitors today.

A walk through the gardens

Access to the estate begins with an impressive stone staircase flanked by palm trees, leading to the monumental façade of the manor house. Along the walk, visitors can enjoy ponds, fountains, cobbled paths, pavilions and pergolas. Among the highlights is the pergola of 72 columns, designed by architect Isidro Velázquez, with 24 stone sculptures that act as water spouts, creating a playful display of water arches that refresh and delight those who pass through.

The “Jardinet de la Reina”, remodeled for Queen Isabel II’s visit in 1859, is another of the most emblematic corners. In this area, visitors can take a break at a small bar while listening to classical music and enjoying a setting full of vegetation, from olive and lemon trees to pomegranates, fig trees and holm oaks.

Flora and fauna

The Jardines de Alfabia botanical gardenThe Jardines de Alfabia are a true botanical garden, as they host species from different corners of the world. Cypresses, cedars, pines, acacias and dwarf palms coexist with traditional Mediterranean plants, creating a unique landscape that changes with the seasons. In addition, the estate has orchards and terraces where vegetables, fruits and aromatic plants are cultivated, preserving the island’s agricultural tradition.

The manor house

The house of Alfabia is as fascinating as its gardens. Inside, you can visit rooms such as the Sala Gran, with portraits of historic military figures, and the Hall of Engravings, which preserves furniture from the 14th to 18th centuries. The Queen’s Room, where Isabel II rested, and the Sala de la Cadira, with a 15th-century chair, are other highlights.

The inner courtyard, paved and adorned with a central fountain, houses a large plane tree, a small chapel, a well, stables and the oil mill. The Mudejar coffered ceiling of the hallway, with polychrome arabesques and coats of arms of Arab families, is one of the most unique elements of the estate, a testament to Islamic art and its legacy in Mallorca.
